Sadly, the idea of Giving Angels was born after my 7yr old nephew, William, died of brain cancer. My oldest son, George, was 6yrs old at the time, and it was difficult to navigate his feelings of losing his cousin. William is closest in age to George, and I could see that he was unsure how to react or process William's passing. As a parent, it was hard to know how much does a 6yr old understand. I knew I didn't have all the answers, but I wanted to keep the memory of sweet William alive for our family. This idea, which is so essential, had never occurred to me before that almost everyone has experienced losing a loved one, and they, too, are looking for ways to keep their Angel alive in their heart.
I wanted to create an organization that would help us remember William and allow others to also honor their Angel. Now the question was, how can we help? As a mom with three children, I constantly rearrange clothing in their closets. Changing seasonal clothes or updating to their growing size seems to be a constant task. Because that process happens frequently, much of their clothing looks brand new. I would bag up the clothes and find friends to give them to, but I wanted to provide the clothing for kids who truly needed it.
Merging the idea of clothing donations with honoring an Angel in your life was the creation of Giving Angels! Truthfully, none of this would have happened without the countless support of friends and family. Chris (my brother) and his wife, Lauren (parents to William), are the most amazing people I know, and without their consent and support, this would not have happened. Also, my husband and friends encouraging me along the way have made this process incredible. I firmly believe there is a lot of good in the world, and each of us can help share it!
